The approved updates retain local amendments, including a sprinkler exemption for one and two-family dwelling units and for townhouses with less than eight dwelling units and/or less than 18,000 square feet. The updates align with State of Iowa adopted codes and most peer communities, and also enable the city to maintain its Class 4 Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS) rating. Coupled with permitting, proper training, and regular inspections, updated building codes enhance safety, incorporate the latest advancements in construction, and offer peace of mind to property owners.
Any project permitted or under review during this transition to the newer codes will be allowed to follow prior standards, and staff is available to assist applicants as needed. Any questions may be directed to Mike Flahive, Building Official, at City Hall or at 641-673-7472 or mflahive@oskaloosaiowa.org.
