Street
Division>Snow Removal
The
City of Oskaloosa
provides snow and ice control in a safe and cost effective manner.
A reasonable level of service for clearance of snow or ice and maintenance
of the street system during the winter months is necessary for routine
travel and emergency services.
With
over 70 miles of City streets to treat and plow, our crews work
around the clock to provide the best travel possible throughout
the city. In order to accomplish this goal there are times when
the City Manager may declare a snow emergency. This is done after
careful consideration of the impact on residents and will be made
as early as possible to property notify the public. Notifications
will be made on KBOE Radio (740 AM or 104.9 FM), the Oskaloosa Herald,
and Mediacom cable channel 12. When a snow emergency is declared
there is no on-street parking until City crews have cleared the
roadways. Vehicles left on the street are subject to towing at the
owner's expense.
Emergency
snow routes are designated by signs bearing the insignia of a white
snowflake on a blue field. Emergency routes shall be given top priority
in clearing accumulated snow. Parking is permitted only after removal
of accumulated snow from the entire width of the street.
While
snowplow operators attempt to minimize the amount of snow that gets
plowed into driveways during snow removal, it is the responsibility
of the property owner to clear their driveway opening.
We
do ask your cooperation in clearing your sidewalk of snow and ice
within a reasonable time after a snowfall. If you fail to remove
the natural accumulations within a reasonable time, the City may
remove the accumulation of snow and ice without notice to the property
owner. The costs shall be assessed to the property.
Please
have patience around City snow plows and City snow removal equipment.
Snow plowing is a time consuming, laborious and stressful job. Do
not follow plows too closely. During their operation they occasionally
have to stop and back up. Please give the plows and equipment plenty
of room to do a good job for everyone.
Brine System
Damage
from Snow Plow
At
times it is very difficult for snow plow operators to judge where
curbs and other obstacles are located during a snow event. If damage
occurs to your yard due to plowing operations, the City will repair
the damage in the spring. If damage occurs to your mailbox due to
plowing operations, the City will repair/replace your mailbox at
a cost not to exceed $35. Call the Street Division at 673-6885 if
you would like to report any damage.
