Building
Department>Licensing Information
The
Building Safety Division administers the plumbing and electrical
exams and issues licenses to individuals and contractors who desire
to engage in the installation, alteration, repair, relocation or
replacement of electrical and plumbing systems or equipment. To
take the plumbing or electrical exam it will be necessary to schedule
a time with the Building Official by calling 641-673-7472.
To
obtain an Oskaloosa license, persons must first pass the exam. Before
a license can be issued, contractors are required to be bonded in
the penal sum of $5,000 and be insured with public liability and
property damage limits of at least $100,000 and $300,000 and $50,000
property damage and also workman's compensation insurance.
The
City of Oskaloosa does reciprocate licenses with cities who use
an independent testing service such as Experior. Reciprocating contractors
must provide us with a copy of their current license, bond and insurance
certificates as listed above.
An
electrical or plumbing permit may only be issued to a person holding
a valid contractor's license. Homeowners may purchase an electrical
permit for any wiring done at the home they reside in. A homeowner
is not allowed, and will not be issued a permit, to do any work
related to the electrical service. Any electrical service work must
be done by a licensed electrician. Only licensed plumbers may do
plumbing work.
Inspections are required for all permits
that are issued. Inspections may be requested by the permit holder
by calling 641-673-7472. Please allow a reasonable amount time for
the Building Official to schedule these inspections. If you do not
schedule an inspection in advance, the Building Official may not be
immediately available to make an inspection when you need one.
