When do I need a
building permit?
Any time you build a new building, enlarge a building or make a
structural change to a building.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
Yes, you must get a permit to construct a fence.
Can a fence go on the property line?
Yes, a fence may be constructed up to the property line.
Do I need a permit for a deck?
If the deck is 30” or more above the ground a permit is required.
Do I need a permit for a shed?
A permit is required if the shed is 80 square feet (8’ X
10’) or larger.
What is the building setback requirement for a shed?
A shed must be located in the rear yard area and must be at least
4 feet from an interior side property line and 5 feet from the rear
property line. If the side property line adjoins an alley right-of-way
then the shed must be 5 feet from the side property line. The shed
must also be located 10 feet from any other structures on the property
or on the adjoining property.
Is a frost footing (42” deep) required for a detached
garage?
Yes, if the garage is 721 square feet or larger.
Can I do my own plumbing and electrical work and do I need
a permit?
Homeowners can do their own electrical system work, except for
the service entrance and panel box, if the work is on the home where
they live. A permit and inspection are required. There is no license
exception for plumbing work for homeowners. All plumbing work must
be done by a licensed plumber who has obtained a permit.
